What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11 (2017). Based on the HEVC (H.265) video codec, HEIC files are roughly 50% smaller than JPEG while maintaining the same visual quality. Apple adopted HEIC to save storage space on devices and in iCloud.

Why convert HEIC to JPG or PNG?

  • Compatibility — Many websites, email clients, and apps still don't accept HEIC uploads
  • Windows support — Older Windows versions cannot open HEIC without installing codecs
  • Sharing — JPG is universally supported and easier to share across platforms
  • Editing — Some photo editors and design tools require JPG/PNG input

JPG vs PNG: which to choose?

JPG — Best for photos. Smaller file size with lossy compression. Ideal for sharing on social media, email, or web uploads.

PNG — Best when you need lossless quality. Larger files, but no compression artifacts. Good for screenshots, graphics, or archival purposes.

Privacy and security

This tool converts your images entirely in your browser using WebAssembly (libheif). Your photos are never uploaded to any server. Nothing leaves your device — not the original HEIC files, not the converted output, not even metadata. You can verify this by checking your browser's Network tab during conversion.

FAQ

How many files can I convert at once?

There is no hard limit. Processing speed depends on your device — modern phones and laptops handle dozens of files without issues.

Does this preserve EXIF data (location, camera info)?

The current version strips EXIF metadata during conversion. This is actually a privacy benefit — your GPS coordinates won't leak when sharing converted photos.

Why not just use iPhone's built-in sharing?

iPhone can auto-convert to JPG when sharing via AirDrop or email, but this doesn't work for all apps and workflows. This tool gives you explicit control over format and quality.
